The Supreme Court has taken action against lawmakers Faisal Vawda and Mustafa Kamal for their recent remarks regarding the judiciary. Following a suo motu notice taken a day prior against independent Senator Vawda, a three-member bench, led by Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa, sought responses from both Vawda and Kamal.
The controversy stemmed from remarks made by Vawda and Kamal questioning the judiciary's integrity. Vawda had criticized the judiciary's alleged interference in political affairs, while Kamal raised concerns about the ethical standards of judges, particularly regarding dual citizenship.
During the hearing, Chief Justice Isa emphasized the importance of constructive criticism and urged lawmakers to address concerns through appropriate channels rather than making inflammatory statements in public forums. He expressed dismay at the trend of targeting institutions and stressed the need for respectful discourse.
The court issued show-cause notices to Vawda and Kamal, asking for clarification of their statements within two weeks. Additionally, the court requested video recordings and transcripts of their press conferences from the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority. The hearing was adjourned until June 5.
